New range of Samsung TVs for 2016 includes an 8K model

Samsung KS9500

At Cyberhomes we’ve been fans of the Samsung range of TVs for a long time. They have a fantastic picture quality, great SMART TV features, look good on the wall and integrate well into the control systems we use. Things never stand still in TV manufacturing and Samsung have this week announced their new range of TVs for 2016. The KS range includes 22 models ranging from 43″ to a whopping 88″ and all are 4K UHD resolution…and then there’s the S9…this is a 110″ that has 8K resolution! Yes you read that right, not 4K but 8K. Don’t worry though 4K isn’t old technology just yet, far from it.

Perhaps controversially, none of the new range includes support for 3D; which might be a disappointment for home cinema enthusiasts…it seems 3D never did capture the imagination of the mass market for home viewing. Samsung are unlikely to be the only manufacturer to stop offering 3D in their new range.

On the positive side, the big new feature is full support for High Dynamic Range (HDR). We’ve spoken about this before on the Cyberhomes blog—it significantly increases the number of different levels between the darkest black and the brightest white…and the white is also much brighter than previous generations of TV (over 1,000 nits in technical speak!). The human eye perceives this increased contrast range as more detail and many people see a better improvement in detail moving to an HDR screen than they do when moving from an HD to a 4K screen.
