Re-use your old iPods, iPhones and iPads

Use your iPhone or iPod as a CCTV camera

Do you have an old iPod or iPhone sitting in a drawer not being used? Perhaps you could re-purpose them as part of your home automation system. Their touch screens, wifi and reasonable processing power make them ideal additional handsets for your control system if you have a solution based on Control4 or Savant…but that’s not the only way you can use them.

Companies like Oxfordshire-based Manything are taking advantage of the fact that many of these old iOS devices have a video camera built into them. Download their app, and your old phone can now become a low cost interior CCTV camera that you can monitor from anywhere in the world where you have an internet connection.

Whilst not an alternative for a fully-integrated hard-wired CCTV system as part of your home automation solution, it does provide a quick and easy way to add temporary CCTV coverage to an area of your property not covered by your normal system. Take it on holiday with you and use it to keep an eye on the contents of your hotel room or holiday apartment. It’ll even send an alert to your current phone if it detects motion!
