Savant IP Video Tiling
One of the great benefits of using ‘best in class’ products is that the manufacturers have the resources necessary to continuously update and improve their products. That’s certainly the case with Savant and their Savant Pro home automation and control platform. This is the first of a number of blogs where we’ll be taking a look at some of the new features and functionality that Savant have added to their latest software release or made available through new product offerings.
What Is Video Tiling?
Video tiling allows you to display multiple sources on one or many displays at the same time. For example, you could have a movie playing on one part of the screen while you keep an eye on the football results in another area and also check out who’s at the front door with CCTV camera footage. Video tiling itself is not a new technology; many TVs have been able to do a simple version of it (often referred to as picture-in-picture or picture-by-picture).
With the increased popularity of 4K ultra high definition resolution televisions, this feature takes on a whole new lease of life. Even if each of the sources your are watching is only taking up a quarter of the screen; a 4K TV has enough resolution for each source to be shown in full HD resolution (full HD is 1920 x 1080 pixels, but a 4K screen is four times the resolution at 3840 x 2160 pixels). So everything is still very sharp and detailed.
What’s different about Savant IP Video Tiling?
Video tiling was available on Savant’s legacy TrueControl app; but now it’s been significantly updated to the latest technology and is available in the latest version of the Savant Pro app if you have the necessary hardware and licences. The first difference is that it is based on Savant’s Video over IP technology that allows all your centralised video sources to be distributed to any TV in the home using your Ethernet network (we’ll cover this in more detail in a future blog). Because each video stream is being encoded as part of the IP Video process, it allows complex video processing to be undertaken before the final image is sent to each TV to be rendered for display.
Unlimited sources can be connected to Savant’s IP video distribution system with tiling, only limited by the size of the network; and the powerful Savant video processor can combine whichever of these you choose using a wide selection of screen layouts (eg four equal sized videos, one large video plus three small videos underneath, one large video plus a small video in each top corner, etc etc). The final rendered video stream supports up to 4K 60 frames per second (fps) at full 4:4:4 quality depth; so no loss in image quality.
And of course, because it’s Savant, this is all incredibly easy to do from the Savant app on your tablet or smartphone. Early next year you’ll even be able to select your required video tiling configuration from the amazing Savant Remote.
